Motorcycle Accidents Due to Tailgating

Every motorcyclist knows that highways can be dangerous places. Cars, SUVs, and trucks are notorious for not sharing the road with motorcycles. Additionally, many drivers tend to tailgate. Pennsylvania reported nearly 3,500 motorcycle accidents in 2016 alone. Although motorcyclists feel as if they have little recourse, those who are tailgated can apply key strategies to avoid getting in an accident as May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month in Pennsylvania.

Check the Speed Limit

Sometimes, motorcyclists who are tailgated may be moving considerably slower than the posted speed limit. Although this is unusual, it does occur. Motorcyclists should understand how fast they are expected to go in certain areas so that they will be less likely to become the victim of tailgating.

Remember a Truck’s Blind Spots

Truck drivers may tailgate a motorcyclist without realizing the motorcycle is there as the front area of a truck is one of its biggest blind spots. A motorcycle that is tailgated by an 18-wheeler or similar vehicle may want to move to a different lane, if possible. Additionally, motorcycles should not cut off trucks or other motor vehicles when switching lanes.

Move Aside and Continue the Ride

If a motorcyclist is being tailgated, the situation can quickly turn fatal. A large vehicle that cannot stop suddenly may run over a motorcycle. A smart course of action for motorcyclists is to get out of the way of an aggressive driver, even if it means taking a different exit or pulling over for a few blocks.

Become a Good Communicator

Motorcycles have relatively small signals and lights, making them tough to notice under certain conditions. Instead of putting on the turn signal immediately before making a move, motorcyclists should communicate their intentions several seconds before making a turn or slowing down. If tailgating is a matter of miscommunication, it should cease when the motorcyclist gains more attention of the road ahead.

Remain Calm

Being tailgated can be a frustrating experience that leads to aggressive driving and poor judgment. Motorcyclists need to remind themselves to keep their composure and deal with the situation reasonably. Getting angry can lead to bad decisions, which can wind up causing accidents.
