What Should I Do If I Spot a Distracted Driver on the Road?

On Behalf of | Jan 16, 2020 | Firm News

Distracted driving, although dangerous, is a common problem among drivers. One of the main reasons of distracted driving lies in the use of cell phones. According to a report by the Governors Highway Safety Association, texting and other electronic usage cause up to 25 percent of all car accidents. If you or someone you know was in a car accident involving a distracted driver, you may be eligible for compensation.

Distracted driving is driving while engaging in activities that take your focus off the road. These activities include texting, listening to loud music, using a navigation system, and eating a big meal. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, distracted driving claimed over 3,000 lives in 2017.

Texting While Driving

Even though texting while driving is banned in Pennsylvania, it has not stopped drivers from engaging in distracted behavior. Drivers who choose to use their phones on their laps in an attempt at hiding their phone use are more hazardous on the road than drivers who use their phones at eye level. Texting is the most alarming and dangerous distraction, as texting causes a driver to take their eyes off the road.

What to Look Out for While on the Road

Distracted drivers share many of the same driving qualities as drunk drivers. When on the road, you will want to look out for drivers that are swerving and drivers who are having trouble sticking to a consistent speed. A few other things you should look out for include:

  • People who seem like they are engaged in other tasks
  • Drivers who are going much faster or slower than the speed limit.
  • Drivers that weave through traffic.
  • Drivers who sit at traffic lights or stop signs longer than they need to.

What to Do If You Witness a Distracted Driver

If you witness a distracted driver behind the wheel, there are a few things you can do:

  • Put enough distance between you and the driver
  • Assume that the distracted driver does not see your vehicle
  • Do not get involved
  • Either slow down and let the driver pass you or try to safely pass the driver
  • If you cannot get away from the distracted driver, call 911 and report that the driver is distracted and describe their behavior
