What expenses does workers’ compensation cover?

On Behalf of | Feb 17, 2025 | Workers' Compensation

If you are injured at work in Pennsylvania, workers’ compensation can help cover your expenses. The system is designed to protect employees by providing financial support while they recover. Importantly, workers’ compensation is a no-fault system.

Here are some key expenses that workers’ compensation covers under Pennsylvania law.

Medical expenses

Workers’ compensation pays for all reasonable and necessary medical treatment related to your work injury. This includes doctor visits, hospital stays, surgeries, medications and physical therapy. If necessary, it can also cover medical equipment like crutches or braces.

Usually, you are required to see an approved doctor under your employer’s insurance for the first 90 days after your injury. However, after that, you can choose your own medical provider.

Lost wages

If your injury prevents you from carrying out work activities, you may be entitled to wage loss benefits. In Pennsylvania, these benefits typically cover two-thirds of your average weekly wage. The exact amount depends on your earnings before the injury.

There are two types of wage loss benefits:

  • Total disability benefits: For workers who cannot return to any job.
  • Partial disability benefits: For workers who are able to return to a lower-paying job.

Specific loss benefits

Pennsylvania law provides additional compensation for certain permanent injuries, such as the loss of a limb, vision or hearing. Specific loss benefits can also apply to things like permanent facial disfigurement.

Workers’ compensation ensures injured employees get the care they need. Recovering from serious injuries can be stressful enough without worrying about finances.
