Common injuries in motorcycle accidents

On Behalf of | Apr 28, 2023 | Motor Vehicle Accidents

Motorcycle accidents can be incredibly dangerous, and unfortunately, they often result in serious injuries. Unlike car accidents, motorcycle riders have very little protection in the event of a crash, making them much more vulnerable to injury.

Several common injuries are seen in motorcycle accidents, and knowing about them can help you take protective measures. They include:

Road rash

This occurs when the rider’s skin touches the pavement or road surface, causing friction burns. Road rash can range from minor abrasions to serious injuries requiring medical attention. Occasionally, road rash can also become infected, making it even more dangerous.

Broken bones

The force of impact in a crash can cause bones to fracture, and riders are particularly susceptible to broken bones in the arms, legs and hands. Broken bones can take weeks or even months to heal, and in some cases, surgery may be necessary.

Head injuries

Even with a helmet, riders can suffer traumatic brain injuries in a crash. These injuries can range from concussions to more severe ones resulting in long-term disability or death. That’s why it’s so important for riders always to wear a helmet when riding a motorcycle.

Spinal cord injuries

The force of impact can cause damage to the spinal cord, resulting in paralysis or other permanent disabilities. In some cases, riders may require long-term care and rehabilitation to help them cope with the effects of a spinal cord injury.

Internal injuries

In a crash, the force of impact can cause damage to internal organs, such as the liver, spleen, or kidneys. Internal injuries can be life-threatening and require immediate medical attention.

Motorcycle accidents can result in many injuries, from minor cuts and bruises to more severe and life-threatening injuries. To reduce the risk of injury, riders should always wear protective gear, including helmets, and follow all traffic laws and safety guidelines. If you are injured in a motorcycle accident due to someone else’s negligence, you may be able to recover compensation. Knowing your legal rights in this situation is essential.
